It's Okay

“She understands now what she, in all her worry, had forgotten.
That even as she hesitates and wavers,
even as she thinks too much
and moves too cautiously,
she doesn't always have to get it right.
It's okay to look back, even as you move forward.”

Reveling in God's Glory

Today was a beautiful day for a drive along The Blue Ridge Parkway.

I have been wanting to return to Pisgah Inn for many years now. In July of 2009 Curt, Chris and I took a day trip together for a little one on one time,  and drove along the The Blue Ridge Parkway heading west from Asheville, hoping to dine at The Pisgah Inn, one of our most favorite special restaurant’s on The Parkway with amazing glassed in 360 degree views of the mountains. The day was perfect and Chris took some lovely pictures of wildflowers, the sky, and of us. It was a wonderful day of looking at the natural beauty of the mountains and sharing precious moments together with our son.

Curt and I cherished that day of togetherness and talked often about that day, looking forward to spending more time with our precious son. Unfortunately, it was to be our first and our last time of getting to do that drive with Chris.
As I look back on that day and time now, I realize that those last 6 months of Curt’s life were filled with many more special adventure’s and moments like this with family. Unknowingly, we crammed in so much in that last year of his life, not knowing what was to come, but God did. No regrets, only wishing for more time.

Going forward to now, 10 years later, my friend Susan agreed to put herself in my hands for the day and we headed off early this morning for North Carolina on an adventure. Susan had never been on The Blue Ridge. This time around I wanted to take the road less traveled up to Pisgah, I had looked at the map found another road to the mountain, we got off the interstate in Canton and headed straight towards the highest peak Mount Pisgah, through beautiful farmlands, small valley's and breath taking scenery. Curt would have loved every moment of that drive, including those switch back curves on that small two-lane road  ascending towards heaven. The Dragon has nothing on this road other then it is a longer stretch of highway. The drive was amazing, we had the road to ourselves the leaves were glorious in their colorful array as the sun glinted on them through the foliage, the air was crisp and clean making you just want to holler to the heavens and say thank you Jesus for this glorious day and beauty that you have shared with us….Oh wait…Susan did do just that in her exuberance.

When we arrived at the Parkway and the Pisgah we were greeted with an overwhelming amount of other leaf looking, Parkway sightseers…too many!  The Pisgah Inn closes at the end of this week until spring, so everyone was taking advantage of this opportunity before the weather changes. Unfortunately for Susan, she did not get to partake of the delicious food the Inn restaurant serves, a two and ½ hour wait was not on my agenda, so we took some pics of the vast and colorful mountains below us as far as the eye could see, then moved on driving west along the ridge-line. Thankfully the crowds did not follow us,  we were able to slowly make our way west, enjoying the clear blue skies, the interesting views and mountain vistas, allowing us to thoroughly enjoy the rest of our adventure.

We left the Parkway  and went to Barber’s Orchard Fruit Stand and Bakery in Balsam, where Curt and I have been many times, when we had gone to his cousin, Bill's cabin up in Tuskasegee, got some tasty Apple treats to bring home, sampled some cider and apple donuts while waiting on line with our senses going crazy with the alluring smells wafting through the air. I could do a whole Forrest Gump thing here but with Apple treats instead of shrimp…but I won’t go there. We then drove on into Waynesville, were we stopped for  Lupper, (lunch and supper) at Bogarts, we both had the chopped steak, with fried mushrooms and onions, it was just what we needed to give us the energy to finish our journey through the North Carolina portion of the Smoky Mountains. After a good stretch it was time to weave our way back through Maggie Valley with Lake Junaluska to the east and Cherokee to the west, making our way to the ‘Big Road’ as Hunter use to call the Interstate, to fight with the 18 wheeler's taking both lanes and headed towards home to Lane Home Place. Whew what a day…but oh my goodness what a blessing to be able to have the freedom and the where with all to leisurely enjoy the beautiful surroundings of and among God’s  earthly and heavenly Glory all within a couple of hours drive from home. Dearest friend Susan your exuberance and excitement made the day even more pleasant by getting to spend it with you. Thank you…After getting home and looking at my pictures I was well pleased,  but the most rewarding to me was the sky picture so very profound and revealing to me. What do you see?

God Bless...and He has...and He will...

Going to The Farmer's Market brings me Joy but also makes my Heart twinge...

Walking amongst the farm stand tents at a local Farmer's Market is to me almost a heavenly experience. The smell of freshly picked fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs and other homemade creations is interesting, enticing and sometimes entertaining when you see unusual plants and variations that cause you to pause and ask questions of the grower/seller.

This past week I made myself take a trip down memory lane by going to Market Square on Wednesday to look at the small Farmer's Market, and watch the vendors set up to get ready for Market at 10:00, and I also wanted to try out the new 'Ruby Sunshine' restaurant on the corner of Market Square across from the TVA Towers, while I was down there. I have gone twice on Saturday to the Market, since Curt's passing in 2009, but it was a challenge that was difficult for me. Today I went to Oak Ridge to their Saturday Market and took some photos got some delicious harvested vegetables to bring home. It was a pleasurable experience.

My husband Curt and I, after his retirement from TVA, made road trips all over the USA and we loved to get off the Interstate system and take the roads less traveled down two lane state roads through small towns on Saturdays and stop at their Farmer's Market's. It was always a delight to meet and greet the vendors, the patrons and see the huge varieties of dogs on leashes that were leading their masters through the market.
We usually ended up with our arms laden with homemade tasty treats for the road and unique gifts to bring home to family and friends.

Once we were in a small town in Kansas, while looking for the road out of town and inadvertently got caught in a parade line that was driving down Main Street. (At that time we had Curt's favorite Honda of all time 'The Honda Element', which was black and was unusual to see when they first came on the market, ours was the first in Knoxville, and it always drew attention. I do believe we sold many just by letting folks look at it and telling them about all of it's cool features.) Back to the parade, here we are in small town USA driving down the street in a parade, so Curt rolled down our window's and started nodding his head, waving and saying hello, folks were waving and pointing at our car and "saying wow what is that, a baby Hummer?" We had the best time just rolling with the flow, taking our time and stopping to talk to the interesting characters we met along the way. Those were some of our off road adventures together and the stories and experiences are priceless.

When Curt retired from his second job at Home Depot he decided to make his God given talent of woodworking his full time profession. He had an ETSY on line business but he really wanted to display his many wooden creations in a public arena so he could get hands on feedback. He got Juried and chosen by The Knoxville Tourist Bureau to show and sell his Dulcimer's, cutting boards, and spoons. He then was asked by The Knoxville Market Square Farmer's market to become apart of their Saturday Market. It was a wonderful, motivating and somewhat challenging experience for us both as we learned the ins and outs of displaying his work in the best and most positive way. Farmer's and Crafter's are unique in their own way and make for interesting neighbor's that eventually become good friends. Such was our years at the market and I treasure those last years of sharing those moments together with joy!

Being married to such a creative, gifted and talented person such as Curt was a little overwhelming at times because his aura was like a bright and shinning star, which was the way God made him, but when his Aura was suddenly taken away it was like the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars had lost their luster. It was a loss so immense to me, and our family, and friends that we all have had a hard time getting our hearts around it. Joy and sorrow goes hand in hand, and learning to take those daily steps forward has been a slow process, but when your daily walk is surrounded by the Holy Spirit you soon find that God gives us all gifts, talents and a purpose, some of us have to look a little harder to find what that purpose is but if we stop, look and listen it will be revealed to us.

"A talent is something that you are instinctually born with that which gives you unique skills and abilities. Talent is set apart from knowledge in that it is not a learned behavior, although it can be strengthened and practiced. The Bible tells us that we are all born with distinct talents and gifts that set us apart from each other. When you discover the talents that God has given you and you use them to glorify Him, you will experience a full life! Our loving Lord wants us to feel whole and complete, and it is through talents that we can find our unique calling in life! Use these Bible verses about talents to encourage yourself and others who are seeking God's plan for their life."

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."Matthew 5:14-16

Are you Humbly Grateful or Grumbly Hateful?

Are you Humbly Grateful or Grumbly Hateful?
What’s your attitude?
Do you grumble and groan,
Or let it be known
You’re grateful for all God’s done for you?

The words to this song seems to apply to my attitude and thoughts as of late. Perhaps it is the dismal rain or perhaps it is just a phase of life.

It seems that vey often when an event occurs in my everyday life it seems to trigger a memory from an earlier period of time. A few days ago I was in Trader Joe's looking around an purusing the aisles for new items as I picked up ingredients for some homemade chicken soup, all of this rain has increased my need for comfort food. I and my cart had just turned onto the baking aisle when this lady reached across in front of me and squealed with delight as her hand clasped a jar of real maple syrup. "I thought well she must really treasure this particular product," and I said as much to her as I smilingly laughed at her joy!. This lady was a few years younger then me, had intermittent gray and brown curly hair and was short. As she gleefully hugged this treasured find to her chest, she said "oh I'm just so grateful that the cost of this treat is within my budget, I didn't think I would be able to afford it, oh this makes me so happy!"

Off she went as I stood there and took a moment to think about her joyful attitude, her reaction and my reaction. It triggered a memory that happened nearly 42 years ago in a small grocery store in Athens, Alabama. It was July, and hotter then all get out, I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with our daughter Amy, and Curt and Chris were waiting in the car as I ran in to pick up some hamburger meat to make hamburgers for our fourth of July cookout. Curt made a comfortable living, and we were always well provided for, but at that time and place we were struggling to make our dollars stretch, so funds were limited until payday. Anyway as I was making my way up to the cash register, I saw a display of fresh off the truck watermelons, they had cut one and it's fleshy insides were red and ripe and it just made my mouth water in anticipation of how sweet and tasty it would feel on my tongue, but they were $5.00, which I did not have to spend on a treat, it just was not in the budget. So I got in line to pay and in front of me were 5 woman of color who were laughing and joking and carrying on and they had a cart full of meat, and fixings and 5 watermelons. The cashier rung up their goods, gave them the total and all of them pulled out their food stamps, paid and left. I was just astounded, and the cashier saw my face and said honey " They have lots of children, no men folk, and they live off of our generosity because we work for a living and pay our bills but they do not, and will never work because they have all they want for free." I walked out of that store got in the car and bawled like a big old baby. Curt was trying to figure out what in the heck had happened and Chris's little face was sad because his Mama was so upset. Finally I got the story out about wanting the watermelon and not being able to afford it, and about those ladies seemingly having all they wanted and more. Curt looked at me with his tender brown eyes and said "Babe it will be okay and I promise you one day you will be able to buy a watermelon anytime you want, but for now you have me and Chris and that precious baby your carrying and that is so much more then those women have, so let's just be grateful that we have enough!

Our time in Alabama was a short 8 1/2 months, time enough to find out I was pregnant after trying for 5 years, suffering through 4 months of morning sickness, with a sweet boy child patting your hand and sitting on the floor next to you saying "it will be okay Mama," time enough to go fishing in the afternoons, when Curt would come home from his job at Browns Ferry we would load into his Junker Dodge farm truck and head over to a local lake sit on the bank and fish with the locals who would laugh as they would throw out their cane pole lines and would soon pull them up with a fish dangling off the end, time enough to fear tornado's and to head to a local shelter at least once a week, time enough for Curt to buy wood design and create plans to make a lovely keepsake cradle for our unborn babe and future generations on the little front porch of our rental house, time enough to eat some local barbeque, where you drive up to the house blow your horn, and they bring out the most delicious tasty barbeque, time enough to drive over to Florence and eat at a local fresh catfish hole in the wall kind of a place where they served catfish, home made fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, a slice of sweet onion and some bread and butter pickles with a glass of tea to wash it all down with. Time enough to move before I delivered our second child, since we were transferred once again by TVA this time to Nickajack Dam in Jasper, Tn. I have moved many times in my life, because of my Dad's service to his country, and then Curt's service and career with TVA, each move always brought sadness at leaving, but when we left Alabama there was only joy because we were going home, home to Tennessee!

Curt's promise has never faltered, he provided generously and unfailingly and is still doing so. I have more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of my days, when so many of my generation are struggling to make ends meet, I am blessed to have been so graciously provided for.

When God places remembrances in your realm of thought, I have learned that it is always for a reason. So as I have gone about my week, I have kept the unknown lady's joyful reaction in my vision, readjusted my attitude and said thank you LORD for reminding me how humbly grateful I should be.

P.S. The chicken soup has done exactly what it needed to do it has offered me comfort on these long rainy days without sunshine. As Curt would say "I have enough and more!"

Sophia Rose enters into Fearless Thirteen

Thirteen years ago at 10:56 am on Thursday, January 19th, 2006 Sophia Rose made her long awaited arrival into the Savannah, Georgia scene. She was gorgeous!

She had strawberry blond hair, bright blue eyes, porcelain skin with a charming dimple in her chin as well as the most scrumptious luscious lips. Those features have only been enhanced with age...

Daddy so glad to have his girls back with him once again.

the awesome Monterey Coast background

My favorite...
She made her first cross country road trip at the age of 5 months when her Big Daddy, Memommie and Mommy drove cross country to meet up with Daddy Mark, who was attending The Defense Foreign Language Institute School in Monterey, California. We had a wonderful time visiting family and friends along the way.
The little Texan at The Big Texan

What did you say?
This young woman has only improved with age as she has traveled the world with her parents and her sister Lydia Mae, she has acclimated herself to several moves, changed schools, homes and friends. She has grown in her learning skills, and is very creative and artistic. Her sensitive spirit is sometimes overlooked as she displays her sarcastic nature which is characteristic of Capricorns. She shares her birthday month of January with her Big Daddy, Curt and has many of his creative features, art, music, writing and more often then not 'she listens to the beat of her own drummer' making her way on her journey a pathway artistically made. Today she is celebrating her 13th birthday by playing all day in a Volleyball tournament,, coming home to Chinese food, and Red Velvet Cake, another Big Daddy, and Uncle Chris's favorite birthday cake, then later watching the first Star Wars movie. A 13 year old with eclectic tastes. That is why we love her and can not wait to see what the teenage years have yet to unfold with this child-woman who the birth Doctor said had an amazing Cerebellum. Bring it on Sophia Rose!
